Mechanical Extremes Thrust: High Strain Rates Team

Shown is a molecular dynamics simulation of shock loading and release of a Cu/Nb multilayer. The layer thickness is 8.6 nm (total sample thickness 340 nm), and a shock wave is generated by impacting the multilayer into a reflecting piston (not shown) at the left with a 450 m/s velocity.

Atoms are colored by excess potential energy, and the first (impact) layer is Cu. Interfaces impede the transmission of shock-induced plasticity (primarily perfect dislocations in Cu and twins in Nb) during shock compression, and reabsorb dislocations upon release.
